General Tips
Perform a walk around BEFORE you get on your bike.
TIP: If renting a bike, take photos BEFORE departing
- Make certain your motorcycle is registered and you have the registration for the bike.
- Know the local motorcycle laws.
Be sure to have a mobile phone, toolkit, first aid kit, and water.
- Check your fuel valve. You should know the location of the fuel petcock valve that controls the flow of fuel to the engine. It can be set to 1 of 3 positions: ON, OFF, RESERVE.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Watch your speed.
- Use your turn signals.
Properly position your mirrors.
- Keep your distance (6 meters|20 feet) from other vehicles and people.
- Use BOTH brakes.
- Avoid blind spots for BOTH you and other vehicles.
Follow all traffic laws.
- Drive defensively.
- Look twice … then look again.
- Leave room for an escape route.
- Always look where you want to go.
Know hand signals.
- Do NOT use your phone when driving!
- Ride in formation.
Do NOT weave in and out of traffic!
- Be extra cautious during rainy weather.
- Avoid manhole covers … slippery when wet.
- Avoid riding in areas with lots of gravel, uneven pavement, or other dangerous road conditions.
Allow enough time to come to a complete STOP …
- At night, wear a high visibility bright YELLOW reflective helmet and vest.
- NEVER ride tired.
- Always drive sober.
Carry an In Case of Emergency Card.
- Your bike has limits, don’t over stress your bike.
- Take a motorcycle training and safety course.
